The homestead exemption allows you to exclude a portion of your home’s value from the tax assessment and thus provides a reduction in your property tax bill. Generally, a homeowner is eligible for a homestead exemption on their home and land provided

  • The home was owned by the homeowner and
  • The home was their legal residence as of January 1 of the taxable year.

The state of Georgia offers homestead exemptions to all qualifying homeowners. Some counties have increased the amount of the exemption over and above the amount offered by the State.
You can file your application for homestead exemption at any time prior to the deadline for filing a property tax return. This date can vary by county. Applications filed after the required date will be posted for the following year.
